A Jaguar E-type for the 21st century The philosophy behind this E-type, owned by Jaguar historian and executive editor of Jaguar World, Jim Patten is to build a car that combines the handling, performance and driveability of a modern sportscar, while retaining the essence of the original E-type. Jim, who incidentally did his college thesis on Jaguar Cars, has been writing about Jaguars for over 30-years and during that time has driven the very best E-types in the world. From owning his first XK 120 at the age of 19, soon followed by a 3.8 E-type, there have been a bewildering number in the intervening years.

So, when Jim decided he wanted the ultimate touring E-type to sit along with his wife’s immaculate open two-seater, he called upon these years of experience to cherry pick the best ideas. Starting with a rust free car from California, albeit fitted with a 302 cubic inch Ford V8 engine, the shell was stripped out and handed over to CL Classics with instructions to do the very best job possible. This involved stripping down to bare metal and replacing the floor pans; the previous owner had cut slots at the end to let cooling air into the cockpit. CL found no real issues with the bodyshell, although there were a number of parking lot dents to deal with. New E-Type Fabs engine frames were fitted.

Meanwhile, a new factory engine block and crankshaft were located along with a cylinder head that had done run up miles only. To this was added a Medatronics 5-speed gearbox, reckoned to be the best available, tried and tested on events like the Carrera PanAmericana. Looking to use the car in a modern world, he been worked closely with Emerald M3D to produce a state of the art fuel injection and engine management system, fitted to the highly regarded Mangoletsi inlet manifold and throttle housing, developed specifically for this purpose. The improved throttle pedal assembly is infinitely variable and in use, offers instant response and smooth power delivery.

With a view to driving extensive miles in hot climates, Clayton air-conditioning is fitted, while the floor and other sensitive areas have been lined out using a combination of Zircolflex heat management material and Dynomat to further enhance the insulation and to provide noise suppression. The Hayward & Scott sports exhaust system is treated with Zircoflex ceramic coating on the 6-branch exhaust manifold, said to reduce under bonnet temperature by as much as 60%. The suspension has been designed to run at lightweight E-type geometry, with hugely expensive Reiger shock absorbers. Brakes are four pot Zeus. Jim felt that it was vital to retain an essential balance of the car without being too radical. Over stepping the mark in any direction would cause unwanted consequences elsewhere. The wheels are to lightweight E-type specification, bolt on for convenience.

The interior was a master-class by Mick and Chris Turley at MCT Restorations, their work reflected in the many concours winning cars from their hands. Both front and rear screens are heated, with the front blue tint, heavier at the top. Other indulgences are footwell lighting, subtle rear fog lamps and a modern sound system with Bluetooth connectivity. None of this would have been possible without the hands on work by possibly one of the most experienced engineers in the business, John ‘Bilko’ Lawrence. All work has been well documented in Jaguar World magazine.

This Car is in incredible condition and has been lovingly looked after for a number of years.
