Ebay item 5/20/07
cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Jaguar-E-Type-1967-JAGUAR-XKE-2-Seater-Coupe-E-Type-Etyp ...
Current bid $1,000 reserve not met, 1 bid, 9 days left in auction.

Sellers description:
1967 Jaguar XKE two seater coupe. I am helping my friend sell this car. The previous owner has had the car since 1981 and it was always stored inside, but not driven very much. The odometer reads 28,237, but is not working. The car was repainted before the previous owner bought it. The license plates that were on the car expired in 1999, so it has not been driven at all for at least 7-8 years. I helped my friend get the car running by changing the gas and oil, and bleeding the brakes. It runs and drives now and it is a real thrill to drive. The clutch is a little spongy, but still works well. The car is almost rust free, the only thing we found were the floor pans were weak, so we bought new ones and replaced them. The rest of the car is in amazingly good shape considering the year. The tires are Pirelli ER7815, which have been on the car since he has owned it. They don’t seem dry rotted. The wheels are in really good shape, considering the age. The chrome bumpers and stainless trim are in very good shape. This car can be driven the way it is or an excellent restoration project.

I'm curious about seeing twin Strombergs on an otherwise original Series One car. There must be a story there someplace. This detail aside, the rest of the car appears pretty much unmolested. Hope the buyer can give it a proper restoration.

This car sold on eBay on 29 May 2007 for $15,075 with 26 bids. See eBay auction number 200111324805 (link as follows):

Very odd, the seller insists that the late Series 2 carb setup is original.

Car appears to be a 1966 model year coupe built in June 1966 which would make triple SU's the original factory installation. It would be interesting to see the owner's research that shows the Strombergs as factory correct for this car.

I AM NOT GIVING THIS CAR AWAY. I HAVE BEEN OFFERED 18K FOR IT LOCALLY BUT WILL LET THE AUCTION PLAY OUT. PLEASE BID TO WIN. THERE IS NO RUST ON THIS CAR AND NO HIDDEN AGENDA. IT IS DRIVABLE BUT ITS 40 YEARS OLD PLEASE KEEP THIS IN MIND. GOOD OIL PRESSURE NO KNOCKS,NO SMOKE. LEAKS OIL NEEDS ALL RUBBER REPLACED EXCEPT TIRES THEY ARE NEW.IF YOU DONT THINK THE CARBS ARE CORRECT THEN REPLACE THEM WITH TRIPLE SU'S.IF THE CAR SELLS LOCALLY THE AUCTION WILL END EARLY.

On Jul-25-07 at 11:25:07 PDT, seller added the following information:
I REALIZE I HAVE CONTRADICTED MYSELF IN THE LAST STATEMENT WHAT I MEANT TO SAY IS IF I GET OFFERED, WHAT I FEEL IS, AN APPROPRIATE AMOUNT FOR THIS CAR LOCALLY, I WILL SELL IT. OTHERWISE I WILL LET THE AUCTION PLAY OUT. YES ITS ALL ABOUT THE MONEY. THANK-YOU FOR ALL THE EMAILS I DIDNT REALIZE THERE WERE SO MANY AUTOMOTIVE HISTORIANS WATCHING EBAY. THE CAR WILL BE SOLD FOR UNDER 18K.

Email from seller in response to question, "What needs doing?": Auction #250145840025, ends 7/28/07:

"Various oil leaks, I would flush the cooling system, runs fine on the highway and as is typical overheats in town driving. Front rotors should be replaced, everything rubber is 40 years old. I cant really think of anything else off hand - it is drivable.

We are the current owners of this car which is in Adelaide Sth Australia. We purchased it in July 2007 from Keith. The vehicle has been converted to RHD and was not exactly rust free. The engine was in very poor condition and there was evidence the car left the factory with triple carburettors and the Strombergs have been replaced. The engine has been fully rebuilt, and a ground up rebuild commenced. The car is about to leave body shop. We will post photos in due course.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
