Private Party or Dealer: Dealer
This Jaguar XKSS re-creation was produced by Lynx Motors between 2016 and 2017 on special order for the company’s North American representative, who has owned it since. The car is built around a handmade aluminum monocoque tub and square-tube engine frame, which are wrapped in aluminum body panels designed to XKSS specifications. A number of major mechanical components were sourced from a donor 1964 Jaguar XKE, including a 4.2-liter DOHC inline-six that was rebuilt by Lynx using performance parts and triple Weber 45 DCOE carburetors. Additional features include a Getrag five-speed manual gearbox with a 9.5” clutch and lightened flywheel, as well as a rebuilt Salisbury 3.07 Power Lock differential, electronic ignition, 30-gallon aluminum fuel tank, Dunlop wheels, upgraded XKE-based suspension, a red leather interior, Sonnenland top, custom luggage case, and more as outlined below. Documents and photos from the fabrication are included along with a specifications sheet from Lynx and a build sheet for the donor XKE. This XKSS re-creation is now offered on dealer consignment in California with a North Carolina title describing the car as a 1957 Jaguar Replica.
The Lynx re-creation is a close approximation of its namesake and is built using similar standards and dimensions, though this example features a left-hand-drive monocoque with an extended footwell and repositioned seat back panels to allow for additional legroom. Panel work includes a hand-built 16-SWG aluminum tail section and louvred bonnet, the latter covering an uprated front chassis frame built using square Reynolds tubing.
The riveted outer panels are finished in black Glasurit paint, and additional features include a rear rack with custom-built luggage, stainless steel side pipes, XKSS-specification polished aluminum bumpers, leather bonnet straps, a Monza-style fuel filler cap, and an aluminum windshield frame fabricated by Lynx with a specially-molded laminated windshield. A black Sonnenland soft top can be raised and removable side curtains are included.
16×6” Dunlop alloy wheels feature peg-drive hubs and chrome-plated knock-offs. They wear Vredestein Sprint Classic radial tires. The suspension system utilizes components from the donor XKE and was modified by Lynx with upgraded shocks, bushings, and adjustable torsion bars. Jaguar XJS solid-disc brakes are combined with Lynx multi-piston front calipers, Aeroquip flexible lines, and Cunifer tubing.
Bucket seats are trimmed in red leather, with matching upholstery on the sills, upper dash, and transmission tunnel. Seatbelts with polished “leaper” buckles are equipped for both occupants, and the bare metal of the monocoque tub remains visible in the footwells.
A split-wood, quick-release steering wheel similar to that found in a D-Type sits ahead of an upholstered dash face, which houses a reverse-sweep 180-mph speedometer and 8k-rpm tachometer. The five-digit odometer shows just over 1,000 miles.
The 4.2L inline-six was sourced from the donor XKE and rebuilt using competition-spec steel rods, a lightened and balanced forged crankshaft, and semi-competition camshafts. The cylinder head was gas-flowed and blueprinted with enlarged ports, and triple Weber 45 DCOE carburetors were added along with a gas-flowed Weber intake manifold. Additional features include electronic ignition, a high-capacity alternator, a lightweight starter, an electrical cutoff switch, dry-sump lookalike components, a high-efficiency aluminum radiator, D-Type-style aluminum header tank, low-profile cooling fan, 30-gallon aluminum fuel tank, an electronic Hyco fuel pump, and braided fuel lines.
Shifting is through a Getrag five-speed synchromesh manual transmission with a 9.5” clutch and a lightened flywheel, and the rebuilt Salisbury Power Lock differential features a 3.07:1 gear ratio.
Photos from the build are included, with a sample of the images shown in the gallery below. The firewall tag from the donor XKE has been affixed to the body, and chassis number 1E30080 has been used to title and register the car. A specifications sheet from Lynx along with a certificate for the donor XKE from Jaguar of Germany is included.
