Manufactured in May 1968 and despatched new to Jaguar Cars, New York, the car offered here, ‘1E17938’, combines the Mk1’s enclosed headlights, small side/tail lamps above the bumpers, slim front bumper and centre motif bar, with interior switches of the later rocker style as fitted to the Mk2. The vendor acquired the car on its return to the UK in 1989 and, although it was completely free of corrosion, entrusted it to marque expert Simon Rheinberg, of Cowling Hill Farm, Bedale, for a full rebuild to UK specification at a cost of circa £20,000. The work included a complete engine overhaul, refurbishment of suspension/brakes and conversion to right-hand drive, with any worn components replaced by new. Coachwork was bare-metal re-sprayed in original Signal Red with correct black interior and new matching hood. Since completion in the early 1990s the vehicle has covered fewer than 3,000 summer-only miles, being maintained as part of a small private collection and housed in a ‘carcoon’ in wintertime. The car is offered with expired MoTs from October 1993 onwards, Jaguar Cars Ltd despatch details, sundry restoration invoices, road fund licence/MoT to May 2006 and Swansea V5.
