This 1966 Jaguar XKE is a Series I roadster that was manufactured on November 24, 1966, and distributed new in the US through Jaguar Cars of New York. The car underwent a multi-year refurbishment that was performed by Images Autobody of Campbell, California, with work including repainting the body in Opalescent Silver Grey, reupholstering the interior in Biscuit leather, rebuilding the 4.2-liter inline-six and four-speed manual transmission, and overhauling the suspension and brake systems. Equipment includes a replacement black soft top, triple SU carburetors, chrome 15″ Dayton wire wheels, four-wheel disc brakes, a wood-rimmed steering wheel, and a heater. This Series I XKE roadster was acquired by the seller in November 2021 and is now offered with a Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust certificate, refurbishment photos, a tool kit, a floor jack, and a clean California title in the seller’s name.

The body was finished from the factory in Willow Green and was placed on a rotisserie during the aforementioned refurbishment for body repair and a repaint in Opalescent Silver Grey. Exterior details include a replacement folding black soft top, a black top boot with tan piping, split front and rear bumpers, glass headlight covers, dual exhaust outlets, and chrome windshield and door-top moldings. The windshield, floors, door sills, and trim are said to have been replaced at the time of the repaint.

Chrome 15” Dayton wire wheels are secured with two-eared knock-offs and mounted with Dunlop SP Sport tires. Stopping power is provided by four-wheel discs with inboard-mounted rears. The seller states that the brake caliper bores were re-sleeved, and additional work performed under current ownership reportedly included replacing the radius arm mounts, wheel bearings and seals, and brake rotors, pads, seals, pipes, and hoses.

The low-rise bucket seats, door panels, and center console were reupholstered in Biscuit leather from Muncie Imports & Classics, and the color-coordinated carpets and contrasting black dashboard cover have also been replaced. Equipment includes a cabin heater, lap belts, and toggle switches for vehicle functions.

The wood-rimmed steering wheel fronts Smiths instrumentation that includes a 160-mph speedometer, a 6k-rpm tachometer with an inset analog clock, and auxiliary gauges in the center stack. The five-digit odometer shows 89k miles, approximately 1k of which were added under current ownership. The seller states that the gauges were re-calibrated during the refurbishment, and total mileage is unknown.

The twin-cam 4.2L inline-six is equipped with triple SU carburetors that were rebuilt under current ownership. An engine rebuild during the refurbishment consisted of re-sleeving the block with replacement cylinder liners, grinding and balancing the crankshaft, and installing an aluminum radiator, electronic fuel pump, and Champion spark plug caps. Additional work performed reportedly included rebuilding the alternator, starter motor, and wiper motor as well as replacing the following parts and components:

Pistons and piston rings

Valves and valve guides

Water pump

Oil pump

Main and camshaft bearings

Timing chain

Wiring harness

Voltage regulator

Distributor

Ignition coil

Battery

Coolant overflow reservoir

Cooling fan

Various gaskets, seals, hoses, and clamps

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission. The car is equipped with a stainless-steel exhaust system, and work performed during the refurbishment reportedly included media-blasting and powder-coating the fuel tank, resurfacing the flywheel, re-sleeving the clutch primary cylinder, and replacing the clutch pack, pressure plate, clutch secondary cylinder, driveshaft and half-shaft U-joints, and transmission gaskets and seals.

The Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust certificate indicates a manufacture date of November 24, 1966 and lists the original colors, equipment, and identification numbers, as well as distribution through Jaguar Cars of New York.

This car has been the subject of much debate both on Jag Lovers and from the peanut gallery on BAT during the March, 2023 BAT auction. The topic has been the upturned rear section of the body behind the "B pillar" (aft of the door trailing edge). The slanting rear bumper blades and the canted rear wheel openings are the most obvious clues that the rear third of the body was somehow attached at an odd angle. (See photo #6 in the exterior photo section above). Observations have also been made in regard to the license plate opening which appears to slant downward to the right (see photo #18 in the Detail Photos: Exterior section).

NOTE 1: BAT removed this vehicle from their listings on 3/10/2023 prior to conclusion of the auction.

NOTE 2: BAT seller tjcanning purchased "parts car" 1E32974 without a title in late April 2023...
