One of the most talented and versatile entertainers of his time, Bobby Darin is best remembered for his 1959 smash hit "Mack the Knife," the recording of which was recently inducted into the Library of Congress' National Recording Registry. This is an enormous honor, one reserved for only 25 selections each year for their significant impact on American culture and history. The selections for the 2015 registry bring the total number of recordings on the registry to 450, only a minuscule portion of the Library's vast recorded-sound collection of more than 3 million items.

It is therefore with great pleasure that we announce the offering of his freshly restored 1967 Jaguar E-Type Roadster at the Mecum Monterey Daytime Auction on August 20, 2016.

Darin got his start in show business partnering with future rock impresario Don Kirshner, composing songs and commercial jingles. His career gained traction when he met young singer Connie Francis, for whom he wrote several songs. After a brief romantic involvement, the couple split at the insistence of her father. Atlantic Records signed Darin under its Atco label in 1958 to write and arrange music. There he recorded his first million-selling hit "Splish Splash," which he wrote after his mother Jean phoned him with an idea for a song.

After writing and recording another multi-million seller, "Dream Lover," in 1959 recorded the epic "Mack the Knife," which hit number one on the charts and stayed there for nine weeks. It sold over two million copies, won the 1960 Grammy Award for Record of the Year and earned Darin the Grammy Award for Best New Artist of the Year.

Darin's life ended all too early, at the age of 37 in 1973, but he left behind a musical and entertainment legacy that has inspired generations to appreciate his talents. Singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and actor, Darin's talents covered the spectrum of musical genres, including jazz, pop, rock'n'roll, folk, swing and country, but it is "Mack the Knife" that became his signature piece.

The first American recording of "Mack the Knife" was performed by jazz legend Louis Armstrong and his All Stars in 1956, but it was actually co-written by German composer Kurt Weill and poet-playwright Bertholt Brecht for their musical drama "Die Dreigroschenoper," known in English as "The Threepenny Opera," which premiered in Berlin in 1928. Darin's version paid homage to Armstrong's jazzy interpretation, and while many other talents have recorded their own versions, even Frank Sinatra himself declared Darin's the "definitive version."

In March 2016 the Library of Congress' National Recording Preservation Board announced its choice of both the Darin and Armstrong renditions of "Mack the Knife," for its 2015 collection, a significant honor reserved for "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" sound recordings.

Documented with a previous Colorado title from 1975 showing Bobby Darin of Hollywood, California as the previous owner, this 1967 Jaguar E-Type Series 1 Roadster was the recipient of a no-expense-spared, professional nut and bolt restoration completed in 2016. The photo-documented restoration was performed on a bare-metal tub with dated components that were indiviudally restored and installed with great attention original delivery details. The quality of pristine craftsmanship is evident in such details as the wiring harness, Lucas battery and even the sewn-in rice bag that helps reduce the "wind slap" of the roof fabric. Accompanied with the original tool roll, Jaguar Heritage Certificate, Colorado title from 1975, Bobby Darin's '67 Jaguar has been recognized by JCNA Judges as a pure specimen ready to stand tall amongst the finest quality Series 1 Open Two Seat Roadsters and exhibits a labor of dedication by knowledgable professionals.
