Ebay item 1/28/09
cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll
Current bid $25,100 reserve not met, 12 bids, 4 days left in auction. Buy it now price $34,995. 104k miles.

Sellers description:
Up for bid is a well-sorted, driver quality E-type roadster that can be used and enjoyed as is and at my reserve price, if eventually you decide to drop $60,000 or $70,000 on a complete restoration, you will be far from under water.

The car looks wonderful in pictures at 75 dpi. In person it’s a nice 20 footer. Here is what keeps it from being better than a 3-/4+ driver quality car: It’s a very old restoration, done in the early 1980s when even great E-types were $11,000 cars, so it was not done to the same standard to which you would restore a now much more valuable car. There is filler in the sills, doglegs and rear wheel arches. It’s not doing anything, but a paint depth gauge will certainly tell you it’s there. The paint has a nice shine, but it’s old and there are scratches, dings, nicks and cracks galore and there is some minor shrinkage on the rear deck where the factory leadwork can be seen. Again, your non-car guy neighbor will think the car is beautiful, but the paint is quite old and has numerous flaws. The chrome is likely original and tired everywhere but the windscreen surround. The windscreen has a tiny chip that could likely be acrylic repaired. I have a pair of rechromed bumper blades (one front and one rear) that will go with the car if it sells via “Buy it Now.”

The car is also a color change: It was born Opalescent Sand with black and it’s now British Racing Green and Biscuit. The change was comprehensive, the firewall and sub-frame tubes are BRG, not the dreaded flat black but again, this was no Classic Showcase restoration, there is some overspray on hardware and on some cables that could be cleaned. The floors are solid (the footwells have a dent or two in them). The only rust hole in the car that I could see is a pinhole in the indented part of the boot floor where the spare tire is secured. Finally, the records indicate that the car dropped a valve in 1986 and at that time, the owner had a factory rebuilt replacement engine installed. According to the records, it was a 1967 manufactured 4.2 liter XK engine. The block indicates that it is in fact a 4.2 liter.

Now for the good stuff: The car is sorted out and is reliable and drives quite well and doesn’t smoke. It has great oil pressure— never less than 40 PSI and it’s generally pegged under load. It has plenty of power, stops straight and goes down the highway straight at any speed you care to travel. The gearbox is delightful with good synchromesh and short throws. The wheels are Daytons and they are balanced as well as any set of wires I’ve had on a car. You can cruise at 75 mph without a shimmy from the wheel. I’ve put over 6,000 miles on the car in two and a half years and it has never failed to start or left me stranded. I’ve taken it both on long trips and back and forth to the Home Depot. In the spring and fall, it’s essentially my daily driver. I’m convinced that it’s reliable because it gets used often. Everything electrical functions except for the washers.

The carbs were just rebuilt by an expert. It was the best money I’ve ever spent on an old car. The car pulls cleanly with no flat spots and plenty of power. The alternator was recently rebuilt and it has a modern fuel pump but it still makes the classic tick, tick noise of an SU. The exhaust note is wonderful but a bit loud as I replaced the stainless steel mufflers with free flow units for the D-type sound. If you want the stainless mufflers, they’re yours, they were removed carefully. It also has a new aluminum radiator and electric fan so overheating is not an issue, I’ve been in traffic on 100 degree days without a problem.

The interior was re-done in 2001 in biscuit leather with a good quality kit from OSJI. The top and boot are also brand new expensive looking canvas items. Panel fit is also quite good as you can see from the photos. While ownership history for the first thirteen years is unknown, I have complete records from 1980 until the present. The car had a single owner from 1980 until 2006 when I bought it. The PO was a meticulous record-keeper and also made a log of major service/repair items that totals $35,000, so this is far from a “mystery car.”

Seller added the following info to the above auction:
As for the engine, it was installed by Coventry South, Limited/Crow Engineering in Lebanon, IL in September of 1986. It is unclear whether they performed the rebuild or someone else. My recollection is that it was a factory rebuilt unit, but I cannot confirm this in the records. I have the certificate/receipt from Coventry South that included a 16,000 mile warranty and running-in instructions for the new engine.

The car reappears on ebay 2/13/10

Current bid $25,100, no reserve, 12 bid 5 days left in auction. Car is said to be in Wilsonville, Oregon. Seller gives no description and using same photos as above '09 auction. Very likely a scam.

I was the seller of this car on eBay in 2009. It went to Southern California. Not a bad investment, I'd say it's worth at least $20K more five years later assuming the new owner has done nothing.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
