Built on the 5th April 1966, this beautiful Jaguar was originally supplied to Jaguar Cars of New York and had just two or three owners in sunny California and Florida.

The first U.K. owner, from the West Midlands, purchased this matching number’s car from dealer’s Beverly Hills Car Club, Inc., Los Angeles, in 2017 as a ‘non-running’ project.

The accompanying history file details its purchase, import documentation and some of the painstaking restoration involving several marque specialists and suppliers (see photos).

The current owner acquired it on the 9th March 2020 and presented it for its first and momentous MOT in October 2020, which it happily passed with flying colours (and with no advisories).

The mileage of 67,764 at the time of the MOT remains the same today.

    THE INTERIOR

     Spotless re-trimmed interior

     Leather upholstery

     All electrical equipment functioning

Also restored, the rejuvenated dark red interior really compliments the body colour, is in unmarked condition, and naturally sports a befitting and adjustable 3-spoke wood-rimmed steering wheel encapsulating the iconic Jaguar emblem.

The dash fascia, extensive Smiths instrumentation and switchgear is extremely presentable along with the leather gear knob and chrome gear lever. We understand that the glove box will be finished off before the sale along with a couple of other finishing touches, yet to be completed.

Opening the boot lid we find a clean luggage space with a textured paint finish to the boot lid and floor. The spare wire wheel with a usable Dunlop tyre is in-situ.

    THE EXTERIOR

     Glossy Jaguar Antique Cream

Re-chroming by Castle Polishing and Chrome Plating Ltd, Dudley, at a cost of £2,340

     New Mohair hood

Restored in the original factory colour scheme, the bodywork looks very straight and true and the fresh paintwork has a deep and even shine.

The owner is unsure who undertook the body and paint restoration, informs us that it was, apparently, a “well recognised” and “impressive” specialist.

The gorgeous flowing lines are enhanced by the sparkling chrome bumpers, trim, lights, door handles and mirrors and the underbody is just as impressive and bears clear evidence that the car has barely been on the road since recommissioning, and never in wet weather.

A degree of final fettling was carried out in August 2020, and there are one or two minor scrapes to the paint, for example, to the front offside wheel arch (see photos). A new black mohair hood has been fitted and comes with a hood bag.

Chrome wire wheels, with some surface corrosion visible, are shod with Rapid P309 205/70R15 tyres with a good level of tread remaining.

    THE MECHANICS

     Glorious 4.2-litre XK engine

Rebuilt engine and drivetrain by Xtreme Speed, Cradley Heath, during 2019

Drives well with no known faults

Lift the long bonnet, and we are greeted by the unmistakable polished and gold-painted twin-cam nestled within the new-looking chassis. Although not quite perfect cosmetically speaking, the engine compartment appears correct in every detail.

Being a later Series 1 car, this E-type benefits from the enduring 4.2-litre XK power-plant with triple S.U. carburettors, a negative earth electrical system, and features an efficient and reliable alternator and servo-assisted brakes.

With a push of the starter button, this wonderful straight-six fires up effortlessly and idles sweetly with no obvious exhaust smoke. As we would expect from a rebuilt engine, the oil pressure is said to be good and there are no known issues regarding oil leaks or overheating.

Reassuringly, the owner tells us that the car runs smoothly with precise gear changes from the 4-speed gearbox, and the refurbished steering, suspension and brakes perform well.

A full Bell stainless steel exhaust system adds to the glorious sound track.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
