Private Party Or Dealer: Dealer

This 1966 Jaguar XKE is a Series I roadster that was built on December 10, 1965 and dispatched to New York later that month for delivery to its first owner in Newark, New Jersey. It was reportedly relocated to Washington state in 1973 and remained there with its second owner until 2012, when it was moved to Arizona with another caretaker before returning to Washington in 2013. The car received a repaint, rust repair, a windshield replacement, and brake overhaul prior to the selling dealer’s acquisition out of Washington in December 2020. Finished in cream with a replacement black convertible top over a matching leather interior, the car is powered by a numbers-matching 4.2-liter inline-six paired with a four-speed manual gearbox. This XKE roadster is now offered in Oregon with a Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust certificate, a tool roll, factory literature, recent service records, and a clean Washington title.

Finished in Cream when new, the car was repainted in its factory color while under prior ownership according to the seller, who notes that a metal patch has been installed on the passenger-side quarter panel. A Pilkington windshield replaces the factory unit, and imperfections are noted on the passenger-side window, replacement soft top, soft top boot, rear bumper guard, and Amco bumper. A matching Amco bumper for the front is included in the sale.

Chrome-finished wire wheels secured with two-eared knock-off hubs wear 185-15 Michelin X redline tires mounted with the stripe facing inward. Braking is managed by four-wheel discs, and the system was overhauled as part of a October 2020 service totaling $5,694 that included replacements of the clutch main and slave cylinders.

Black leather upholstery is accompanied by matching door panels, interior trim, and replacement carpeting. A period AM/FM radio is retained in the center stack, and a wood-rimmed three-spoke steering wheel fronts factory Smiths instrumentation.

Controls, switchgear, and Smiths instrumentation are shown further in the photo gallery below. Approximately 70k miles are indicated on the five-digit odometer. The clock is inoperative, and the fuel gauge reads inaccurately.

Paired with a four-speed manual gearbox, the twin-cam 4.2L inline-six features triple SU carburetors and was factory rated at 265 horsepower and 283 lb-ft of torque. The stock radiator screen is absent, and the selling dealer changed the oil in December 2020.

Cylinder-head stamping 7E7156-9 is shown above and matches the engine number noted on the chassis identification plate and on the Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust certificate. The rear portion of the driver’s floorpan has been replaced according to the seller.

The factory tool roll is included in the sale and is accompanied by a jack, an owner’s manual, a dealer directory, a maintenance chart, and a storage pouch.

The Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust certificate indicates a manufacture date in December 1965 and lists the original colors, equipment, and engine number, as well as distribution through Jaguar Cars of New York and delivery to its original owner in Newark, New Jersey.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
