Seller's description:
This 1966 Jaguar XKE is a Series I open two-seater that was manufactured on October 12, 1965 for the US market. It was purchased new by Ernest Scrivener of San Antonio, Texas, and was acquired by the current owner’s brother-in-law in 1971. The current owner’s husband bought the car in 1976 and gave it to her as a birthday gift twenty years later. The car underwent a cosmetic restoration between 2003 and 2012, during which a repaint in the factory Opalescent Silver Blue was performed, and the dark blue interior was reupholstered. The blue soft top was replaced in 2019, and a black hardtop accompanies the car. The 4.2L DOHC inline-six features triple SU carburetors, electronic ignition, and stainless steel exhaust headers, and is mated to a full-synchromesh four-speed manual gearbox. Additional servicing since the restoration has included the fitment of a new clutch and a refresh of the braking system. This 4.2-liter Series I OTS is offered on the current owner’s behalf with records, removed parts, a Jaguar Heritage Trust Certificate, and a clean Texas title.
The exterior was was stripped to bare metal and repainted in the factory color of Opalescent Silver Blue in the early 2000s. A black hardtop is seen installed above, and a period Amco luggage rack is affixed to the trunk lid. In August 2019, the convertible top frame was powdercoated, and a new dark blue canvas top and tonneau cover were installed.
15″ Dayton wire wheels are secured with two-eared knockoffs and are wrapped in Vrederstein Sprint Classic tires. The power-assisted four-wheel-disc brakes were serviced in 2019 with new caliper seals and brake lines at all four corners.
A dark blue interior kit from OSJI was installed in 2012. Work included new leather seat covers, cushions, door panels, center console trim, carpets, and more. Dynamat insulation was also installed on the floor and firewall. A new leather shift boot was sewn in last year.
The wood-rimmed steering wheel frames Smiths instrumentation including a 160-mph speedometer and a 6k-rpm tachometer with a nested clock. The five-digit odometer shows 96k miles, though the seller notes that the car was driven for a number of months while the speedometer had been removed for repairs. Total mileage is unknown. An aftermarket digital radio is installed but not connected, and a replacement dashboard is included in the sale.
The 4.2-liter DOHC inline-six is equipped with triple SU carburetors that were reportedly rebuilt in 2018. The engine itself was rebuilt in 1976 by Romer Service Company of Austin, Texas, and a handwritten work order is viewable in the gallery below. Electronic ignition, a stainless steel header tank, an electric cooling fan, and a complete stainless steel exhaust system have been added. An engine-out service in 2014 included a new clutch, pressure plate, water pump, thermostat, engine mounts, and belts. A high torque starter was fitted in 2015, and the oil pressure sender was replaced in 2019. Some leaks from the front and rear rope-style crank seals are noted. Removed parts, including a gas tank and the factory exhaust manifolds, are included in the sale.
The cylinder head is stamped “7E6186-9,” which matches the chassis plate and the Jaguar Heritage Trust certificate.
Power is sent to the rear wheels via a full-synchromesh four-speed manual gearbox that was rebuilt in the late 1970s. A new shift linkage was installed in 2014. Additional photos showing the underside of the powertrain, the floors, the suspension, and the inboard rear brakes are provided in the gallery below.
The Jaguar Heritage Trust Certificate lists a build date of October 12, 1965, along with the factory colors and the chassis, body, engine, and gearbox numbers.
