Lot #87233

This 1962 Jaguar XKE Series I roadster was acquired out of storage by the seller in 1982 and underwent a refurbishment beginning in the summer of 2018. Work included repainting the exterior in its factory hue of blue, re-trimming the blue leather interior, overhauling the 3.8-liter inline-six, and replacing the four-speed manual gearbox. The car is also equipped with triple SU carburetors, rack-and-pinion steering, a limited-slip differential, four-wheel disc brakes, a blue convertible top, and 15″ center-lock wire wheels. The differential drain plug was resealed and the right-front side marker bulb was replaced in preparation for the sale. This XKE is now offered with an owner’s manual, service manuals, refurbishment records and photos, a replacement knock-off hammer, removed stock parts, a Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust certificate, and a Pennsylvania title in the seller’s name.

The exterior was finished from the factory in Opalescent Silver Blue and was repainted by Lippincott’s Garage in Sinking Spring, Pennsylvania, following rust repairs that included replacing the welled floors and inner sills with a reproduction panel sourced from England’s Martin Robey Group. Details consist of a louvered clamshell hood, covered headlights, a replacement windshield, dual center-exit exhaust outlets, wrap-around chrome bumpers with overriders, and a replacement blue fabric soft top. A Bassett’s black fabric top boot is included in the sale. The seller notes that the right-front side marker bulb was replaced in preparation for the sale.

Replacement 15″ chrome wire wheels secured with replacement two-eared knock-off nuts are wrapped in 185-series Pirelli Cinturato tires showing 2019 date codes, and a matching spare is stowed beneath the trunk floor. Braking is provided by servo-assisted four-wheel disc brakes that were rebuilt with replacement master cylinders during the refurbishment. The front suspension components were cadmium plated, and the independent rear suspension was overhauled with replacement bearings and seals.

The reupholstered cockpit features leather-trimmed bucket seats with color-coordinated door panels, sills, and carpeting. Appointments include “dotted” aluminum trim on the center stack and console as well as an open glovebox, a radio blanking plate, lap belts, and a passenger-side grab handle. The driver’s seat was installed in the full-back position without the adjustment tracks for additional headroom. The removed seat tracks are included in the sale.

The wood-rimmed steering wheel fronts a 160-mph Smiths speedometer and a 6k-rpm tachometer with an inset clock as well as gauges for oil pressure, coolant temperature, fuel level, and amperage mounted in the center stack. The five-digit odometer shows 77k miles, approximately 300 of which are said to have been added since completion of the refurbishment. True mileage is unknown.

The seller reports that the 3.8-liter inline-six was over-bored and rebuilt using .020″-over pistons, a reground crankshaft with undersized bearings, replacement timing chains and idlers, and a refurbished gold-painted cylinder head. Equipment includes a high-capacity aluminum radiator and oil pump, a CoolCat electric cooling fan, a concealed electric fuel pump, a gear reduction starter, a rebuilt generator, a replacement voltage regulator, a PerTronix Flame-Thrower electronic distributor, a replacement wiring harness, a replacement harmonic damper, and polished carburetor dashpots and valve covers.

The engine breathes through a trio of rebuilt SU HD8 carburetors, black porcelain-coated exhaust manifolds that are said to feature Cerakote inner surfaces, and a replacement stainless-steel exhaust system. The removed starter, cooling fan, fuel pump, and distributor are included in the sale.

The number R5063-9 stamped on the engine block matches the number recorded on the Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust certificate shown below and stamped on the chassis plate, a photo of which can be viewed in the gallery along with the frame, body, and transmission number stampings.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a rebuilt all-synchro four-speed manual transmission sourced from a later-model Series I car as well as a limited-slip differential. Replacement clutch hydraulic cylinders are said to have been installed during the refurbishment, and the differential drain plug was resealed in preparation for the sale. The removed factory gearbox is included in the sale.

The Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust certificate indicates a manufacture date of April 10, 1962, and distribution through Jaguar Cars of New York as well as the factory serial numbers and colors.

The current Pennsylvania title carries an Antique brand.
