Jaguar hatched their master plan to produce a ground-breaking sportscar along the lines of their Le Mans winning D Type as a replacement for their hugely successful, though becoming rather dated XK120/140/150 line in 1956. The resultant E Type monocoque finally reached the showrooms in 1961, initially with a 3.8-litre 6-cylinder XK power unit, though soon with an engine of 4.2 capacity. Thanks to aerodynamically slippery bodywork of both open roadster and closed fixed head coupe body styles offered - initially with faired in headlamp cowls - E Type performance was sensational and the model instantly achieved legendary status. Those early E Type owners could enjoy 150mph performance for less than ú2100 - by comparison, the rival DB4 from Aston Martin cost a thumping ú3755!
The 1968-manufactured E Type Series 2 offered here is a 4.2-litre, right-hand drive, 2-seater coupe, which was supplied to the vendor by marque specialists the E Type Centre. He tells us that a stainless steel exhaust and tail pipes have been fitted recently, and that currently the fixed head bodywork is good, the cream paintwork average and the black interior good. The condition of 4253cc six, 4-speed manual gearbox and electrical equipment is claimed to be good. The MOT Test certificate has been freshly renewed and, because of its age of course, the Coventry classic qualifies for a Road Fund tax exempt disc.
PLEASE NOTE: Further to our inspection of this vehicle the estimate has been revised. Please check this on the information on the screen.

This has always been my dream car. Some work has been done, but still much to do, and lots of money to spend, but I'll get there. Now fairly tidy, driving vehicle.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
