Car at auction 3/22

Auction description:

Sellerr oddymerritt

Location: United States, United States

Seller Type: Private

Odometer Reading: 31058

Chassis Number: 1E79005

Engine: 4.2L I6

Gearbox: manual

Steering position: LHD

Colour: Red

Interior: Natural / Vinyl

Estimated Price: $80,000 - $90,000 did not meet reserve.

This is a series 1.5, meaning it is a Series 1 body with non-covered head lights, Series 2 interior and early Series 2 engine under the hood. The 4.2L in-line 6 engine in this E-Type has not been detuned to Series 2 specs but does have all the Series 2 bolt-on parts and is mated to a 4-speed manual transmission. This 4.2 makes roughly 265hp. The regular Series 2 engine was detuned to meet US emissions standards, the carburetors were replaced, which lowered the power to 246hp. These cars also sport an all-around independent suspension setup that provides drivers with an unbelievably smooth driving experience.

On the Outside

This E-Type is finished in Jaguar Red. This is not the original color of the car, but the paint looks great. The chrome bumpers and the wheels especially would benefit from a good detailing, but there is no indication of surface corrosion on either. All of the panels are straight and the chrome trim lines up very neatly. The headlights are clear, and the taillights appear to be in proper order. There are small chips in the paint below the driver’s door as well as above the rear hatch, but overall, the paint is in great condition.

On the Inside

The interior to this E-Type is phenomenally done. All of the vinyl inside is natural and undyed, and it looks incredible. The recovered interior seats and rear hatch floor are gorgeous. All the seats are in great condition and show no holes or tears, the carpets look expertly cut and fit snugly into all of their respective areas. The dashboard and dash pad are both clean and free of cracks. All the switches and gauges are tidy, and the wooden steering wheel and shift knob are gloriously glossy.

Underneath

The underside of this E-Type is clean but not perfect. Importantly, there is no visible corrosion in the body or floorboards. However, there does appear to be surface corrosion on some of the bare metal and the exhaust pipes. It is clear based on the rest of this vehicle’s condition that there Is no major damage underneath.

History Highlights

The Jag was passed down by the current owner's uncle and had been left sitting for 15 years. Within the last 5 years the vehicle was restored back to good running condition. This E-Type now features all new brakes, master cylinder, booster, front calipers, and lines. A new clutch master, slave and line were installed. A new fuel pump, fuel tank, and fuel filter have also been installed. A complete flush of the radiator was performed. All carburetors are freshly rebuilt, and all wiring issues have been addressed with the exception of the windshield wipers. A new dash pad, center console, and all new belts and hoses were installed. Fresh fluids were put into the car. A new windshield with a new rubber seal were the final touches to the long list of items installed during the course of this restoration effort. Originally green, the car has since been painted to a striking Jaguar Red.

Lot #71775

This 1968 Jaguar XKE is a Series 1.5 2+2 coupe that was reportedly acquired by the current owner in 2019 from a family member following approximately 15 years of storage. Subsequent recommissioning is said to have included servicing the brakes and carburetors, refreshing the interior, and replacing the windshield, blower motor, water pump, fuel sending unit, and front shocks. The car has been repainted red over cream vinyl upholstery and is powered by a 4.2-liter inline-six equipped with dual carburetors and paired with a four-speed manual transmission. Equipment includes a wood-rimmed Nardi steering wheel, 15″ wire knock-off wheels, a heater, and an aftermarket stereo. This XKE 2+2 is offered by the seller on behalf of the current owner with service records and a clean Mississippi title.

The Series 1.5 XKE featured early-style taillights mounted above the rear bumper as well as exposed headlights similar to the Series 2. Said to have been originally finished in green, this example has been repainted red. The windshield was replaced during current ownership, and features include chrome bumperettes, a vented hood, pop-out side windows, and a side mirror for the driver. The windshield wipers are non-functional and photos in the gallery below document paint chips and areas of wear on the brightwork.

Knock-off 15″ wire wheels are wrapped in 205/70 Douglas All-Season tires. The upper ball joints, outer tie rods, steering rack mounts, hub seals, and front shocks were replaced and the brake calipers were rebuilt in 2019. The seller notes the brake master cylinder, booster, and lines have been replaced during current ownership.

The 2+2 cabin features seats trimmed in cream vinyl with a matching center console and door panels. Amenities include an aftermarket stereo, a heater, a wood shift knob, and a locking glovebox. The heater core was repaired, the ventilation ducts were resealed, and the dashboard pad, center console, blower motor, carpets, and seat cushions have been replaced since 2019.

A wood-rimmed Nardi steering wheel frames a 160-mph speedometer and a tachometer with a 5,500-rpm redline. The five-digit odometer indicates 31k miles, approximately 5k of which were added by the current owner. True mileage is unknown.

The 4.2-liter inline-six is equipped with finned valve covers and twin Zenith-Stromberg carburetors. Work performed during current ownership included installing an Accuspark distributor, flushing the radiator, rebuilding the carburetors, resealing the fuel tank, and performing electrical repairs. The water pump assembly, battery, fuel level sending unit, belts, and hoses were also replaced following long-term storage.

Power is delivered to the rear wheels via a four-speed manual transmission. Corrosion is noted on the underside.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
