This E-type Series 1 2+2 is a striking example of the iconic classic British sports car, which wears an attractive patina of age and is presented in smart overall condition.

It is powered by the 4.2-litre version of the legendary multiple Le Mans-winning twin cam straight-six, fed by triple SU carburettors and producing 265 bhp @ 5400 rpm, driving the rear wheels via a four-speed manual transmission.

The odometer currently displays 40,607 miles, however this is not warranted.

The car was delivered new by Jaguar Daimler House in Liverpool, UK, and in period wore Opalescent Silver Blue paintwork and the number plate ‘KLV 6E’. It is now located in Tasmania, Australia, where it was shipped by its third owner in 1974 from the second owner in the ACT.

It had the honour of being ‘endorsed’ by former chairman and CEO of Jaguar Cars, Frank 'Lofty' England when, during his visit to Tasmania during the early 1980s, he was driven around by the third owner. The former WWII Lancaster bomber pilot was also given the opportunity of flying the then owner's light aircraft during his visit.

This car’s competition history includes success in the inaugural Targa Tasmania in 1992 and the following two years - an event now recognised as one of the premium tarmac rallies on offer to motoring enthusiasts.

As shown by its Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust production record certificate, this matching-numbers Series 1 E-Type was originally finished with Opalescent Silver Blue paintwork over a blue interior, but it was resprayed in Jaguar dark blue by its third owner during the 1980s.

Elsewhere, the car is believed to remain in entirely original order featuring a wood-rimmed steering wheel, toggle switches and radio cassette player.

It has been fitted with an aftermarket trip computer for competitive road racing and has a full stainless-steel exhaust system. Period leather front sport seats have also been fitted

Accompanying the car is a selection of spares, including a spare set of original wire wheels and a set of Minilite replica wheels, as well as a wheel spinner hammer, original jack, a toolkit and various books, official Targa Tasmania posters featuring an in-car cockpit shot.

Also present are the original owner’s handbooks, the supplementary maintenance booklet, some invoices for past vehicle maintenance, a spare Moto-Lita steering wheel, two front lower ball joints, and a toggle switch panel identification strip. Also present is a Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust Certificate.

There is no impact damage present on the bodywork.

The resprayed Jaguar Dark Blue paintwork is in generally fair, presentable condition, which is to be expected given its age. The vendor notes some stone chips and scuffs around the car, as well as some bubbling under the paintwork on driver's door, a scrape along the left-hand rear guard, and a dent on the left-hand side of the radiator intake opening.

Inside, the cabin presents well, and is believed to be totally original. It shows some creasing and wear on the blue leather upholstery, but with no major wear or heavy discolouration.

The gear selector gaiter is torn at the rear, and the leather piping on the centre console has worn through in a few areas. Overall, the cabin presents with a handsome ‘patina’ of age.

The vendor reports that the toggle switch panel identification strip is cracked

There are no known electrical or mechanical faults with the car, and there are no warning lights showing on the dashboard.

This E-Type’s most recent service was carried out during November 2021 by its current owner. The work comprised of an engine oil and filter change, along with the replacement of the tie rod ends and the upper ball joints.

Prior to this, the car is reported to have been routinely serviced by marque specialist David Short Automotive.

The vendor encloses receipts for engine and gearbox rebuilds during 1992/3 and the car is reported to have travelled a mere 7,000 km since the work was completed.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
