Car to be at auction 8/10
www.russoandsteele.com/collector-car/1965-Jaguar-XKE/5693

Auction description:
Consignment # 7088
VIN: 1E20094
This rare 1965 Jaguar XK-E Roadster remains its original right-hand-drive and retains its original anti-theft steering column. Restored to a very high standard including a new Stay-Fast top, this E-type is one of the first with the legendary 4.2 liter inline-six with Triple SU carburetors. 1965 was the the only year that features all three of the following 'best of the best' features: knock-off spinners, a fully-synchronized transmission and covered headlights.

Car on ebay 81/6/10, no photos....

Opening bid $35,000 reserve not met, no bids yet 6 days left in auction. Buy it now price $105,000. Car now said to be in Glendale, California.

Sellers description:
In true British tradition, a proper sports car is driven from the right side. Right hand drive sets this car apart from the thousands of other Jaguars. It is a distinctive and refreshing driving experience, which can be appreciated worldwide.

This particular cat had its body and paint professionally restored by XK's unlimited in Goleta, Ca. The body restoration included use of lead instead of bondo for rigidity and quality. The motor is period correct, although not numbers matching, and the valve covers have been updated, as the earlier ones leaked.

We have extensive receipts documenting the refurbishment of this car to a very high standard, down to the last nut and bolt. For example, the brake calipers have been re sleeved in stainless steel. This car uses only the highest quality parts with the mind set that this car would serve our family for many years. But in fact, it has remained a trailer queen for all these years, rarely to have ever left the garage.

There are estimated to be only a handful of right hand drive E types in the U.S.

This is a rare opportunity to enjoy one of the nicest and rarest of them all.

It runs and drives perfectly, and doesnt leak a drop of oil.

No expense was spared in this extensive restoration.

This gorgeous 1965 Jaguar E-Type Roadster Right Hand Drive. This was expertly restored in 1995 by XK's Unlimited. This was a no expense spared endeavor, that sought perfection. The result is a stunning automobile, that should satisfy any Jaguar enthusiast. Finished in correct Carmen Red, with correct black interior and top. Correct, number's matching body and drive train, 4-speed manual transmission. Period correct am/fm radio. 45k actual miles, California title. Your pre-bid inspection is most welcome. It has been stored indoors, and appears as clean and fresh as it did at the completion of the restoration. The car has brand new Red line tires. If you won't to convert to Left hand drive we can for a fee no problem.

This Car Number is for a fixed head coupe. Either this car left the factory as a fixed head coupe and has had its roof chopped off to create a roadster, or it is a roadster with an incorrect data plate taken from a fixed head coupe.

If anyone is interested, I owned this car from 1979 to 1999 and did the restoration. Why is it a roadster with a coupe VIN? The original car was a pale primrose on black RHD coupe. It had been painted a hideous gold and had a weathershields sliding sunroof installed. In the summer of 1979 the car was in a side collision that damaged the body tub. We had it repaired but were never satisfied with the results. The body tub had some bad rust. Rather than replace the tub with a coupe tub, I bought a roadster tub as the basis of the restoration (back in the mid-80's nobody cared about the VIN numbers matching and I had not plans to sell the car.

The car was completely disassembled in 1986 and, as my finances permitted, I proceeded with the restoration, one box of rusty old English metal as a time. The body tub that I bought was a bit rough and, after several mis-starts on getting done right, I took the assembled body, on a restoration stand, to XK;s Unlimited in San Luis Obispo. They supervised the completion of the body restoration through final paint. Soon after the body was done, I moved from California to Texas, got married, and didn't have much time for the project. I had the car to about 90% complete when I realized, with a growing family, that I truly did not have to time to get it to 100%. In 1999 the car was sold and moved back to California. The family that bought it did a very nice job of completing it as I had originally envisioned. It is worthwhile to note:

1) The body tub has no plastic body filler. All of the work was done as Jaguar did at the factory with lead.

2) The bonnet, picture frame, and door skins are reproductions (Martin Robey), not original (hence no VIN on the picture frame).

3) The repaint was over a fully dip-stripped body and the paint is Glasurit Poly done to show quality standards.

4) The cylinder head has a non-matching VIN (from a 420, not an XKE, but it is the same head).

5) The valve covers are incorrect and are from a series 2 (done for practicality, they don't crack/leak as easily as the series 1 smooth covers).

5) The convertible top is from a series 2 (all that I could get at the time) and the cover is canvas.

6) I sold the car with its original English registration plate (ACL122C).

7) The car originally had the steering lock mechanism installed at the factory. I felt that the design was unsafe so removed the wiring (sold with the car) and reconnected the dash key lock but left the lock mechanism in place.

8) The interior is a GW Bartlett replacement full kit (seats, carpets, door panels, side panels, etc.)

9) The wiring harnesses are all Martin Robey reproductions.

10) Every bit of rubber (body gaskets, seals, tires, grommets, suspension bushings, mounts, etc) were replaced.

11) The wheels are series 2 (again, stronger that series 1 and done for safety, but are original Dunlops).

12) The front suspension arms are blasted and painted rather than cad plated (done to save some money and last longer than the plating).

Except for the series 2 items noted, and the non matching VIN and color, I tried to stay as original as possible in the restoration. Again, I was building this car for my own pleasure, not to be sold. Restoring (not just fixing up) cars was a family hobby that my father and I spent many enjoyable years doing. We always worked to a high standard of quality and originality. This XKE was built to be a very nice driver. We invested a lot in the body to make it right. We spent on the electrical because we didn't want any gremlins. We made sure the mechanicals were sound to use the car as a daily driver.

If anyone has any interest in knowing more about the car or seeing some pictures of it before or during restoration, feel free to contact me by posting to this board. I check it from time to time.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
