This 1966 Jaguar XKE is a left-hand-drive Series I roadster that was built on September 14, 1965, and delivered to its first owner in England before it was imported to the US. It spent time in Maryland and Pennsylvania before it was refurbished in 2003 and acquired by the seller later that year. The car is finished in black with a matching soft top and leather upholstery, and power comes from a rebuilt 4.2-liter inline-six paired with a four-speed manual transmission. Features include four-piston brake calipers, Koni shocks, 15×7″ wire wheels, a 2″ exhaust system with stainless steel headers, an electronic ignition system, halogen headlights, and a RetroSound stereo. Service performed in 2021 included a replacement battery and spark plugs as well as a carburetor adjustment. This XKE is now offered with spare parts, tools, service manuals, Jaguar North American Archives correspondence, refurbishment photos, service records, a trickle charger, a car cover, and a clean New Jersey title in the seller’s name.
Delivered from the factory in Carmine Red, the car is said to have received bodywork before being repainted in its current black during the 2003 refurbishment. Replacement door handles, locks, hinges, and strikers were reportedly installed by Bassett’s Inc of Wyoming, Rhode Island, during the seller’s ownership. Halogen headlights are fitted under replacement glass covers, and additional features include hood louvers, split front and rear bumpers, and twin exhaust outlets. Tarnishing is noted on the passenger side rear bumper and can be seen in the gallery.
The black mohair soft top was sourced from Aldridge Trimming Ltd. and can be seen raised in the gallery. The 15×7″ wire wheels feature two-eared knock-off spinners and are mounted with 215/65 Bridgestone Potenza RE040 tires. A matching spare wheel with a Dunlop tire is mounted under the trunk floor. Front and rear Koni shocks were installed under the seller’s ownership, and braking is handled by Coopercraft four-pot calipers and discs at all four corners.
The cabin features seats trimmed in replacement black leather sourced from Aldridge Trimming Ltd. along with matching door panels and carpets. A replacement center console was installed under the seller’s ownership along with a RetroSound stereo, new speakers, a blower motor, and a turn signal switch. Additional equipment includes a sliding rear-view mirror, a glove compartment, and crank windows. Scuffs are noted on the driver-side sill.
The wood-rimmed steering wheel frames Smiths instrumentation consisting of a 160-mph speedometer and a 6k-rpm tachometer with an inset clock. Gauges for amperage, oil pressure, coolant temperature, and fuel level are located in the center of the dashboard. The clock is inoperable. The five-digit odometer shows under 35k miles, 2k of which were added under current ownership. Total mileage is unknown.
The 4.2L twin-cam inline-six is equipped with triple SU side-draft carburetors and was factory rated at 265 horsepower and 283 lb-ft of torque. The engine was rebuilt during the refurbishment and reinstalled along with an electronic ignition system, a replacement radiator, and an electric cooling fan. Replacement spark plugs and a battery were installed in 2021, at which time a carburetor adjustment was performed.
The cylinder head is stamped “7E2829-9” and matches the stamping on the engine block and the chassis data plate.
Power is sent to the rear wheels via a four-speed manual gearbox. A lightened and balanced flywheel was added during the refurbishment along with a 2″ stainless steel headers and exhaust system.
The Jaguar North American Archives correspondence lists factory colors and identification numbers as well as a manufacture date of September 14, 1965. It also notes that the car was originally delivered to its Maryland-based first owner in England on October 14, 1965.
