Keeping track of every Jaguar E-Type, with your help.

If you got here via the XK Data, Saloon Data, XJS Data or the Healey Data nav bar, this blog can't "live" on multiple domains as the blogging software doesn't support it. The items discussed below apply to all domains, and I'll endeavor to highlight items from all sites.

Fixed Head Coupe #1E30036 is a lovely car, and the comments section is exactly what I had hoped to see when I started this site–a way for past and current owners to get in touch with each other, and for current and future owners to learn more about their car’s past. Simply great!

Links: In and Out

I always welcome new links to add to the page that’s in the left nav bar. I’d really like to add more club and “personal” pages, too. If your local club isn’t on the list and they have a web site, send me the URL, or submit it using the small form on the links page. All links do have to be related to XK or E-Types (at least tangentially!).

On the other side of the ledger, please add XKData or XKEData to your site or ask to have it added to your local club’s site if you find your visit here worthwhile. The more people that are aware the data sites exist and the more cars and photos there are in the database, the more valuable it becomes.

Putting together the XK Color Guide last night I ran across this fixed-head coupe, which is interesting because it’s one of the few cars in either database painted Sherwood Green…a color that would seem to have been rare on XKs and almost non-existant on E-Types–only one of the 8,000+ E-Types in the database is painted this distinctive color.

Moved Servers

Sorry if you weren’t able to get to the blog earlier, the database server this blog lived on was apparently an especially busy machine. I’ve moved to a new database server and hopefully that will help.

XK & E-Type Colors

They’re somewhat hidden away, but there is a fairly useful E-Type color guide as well as an XK color guide in the resources tab on the left bar. One day soon I’d like to make a more “interactive” application but time just doesn’t allow me the luxury at the moment.

Featured Car: E-Type 2+2 #1E78965BW

I chose this 1968 2+2 as I think the color is rather striking–and I admire that there’s a comment from February saying it needs a respray and lo and behold, in June it has one. Something about progress and initiative is a pleasant contrast to my own stagnation!

Also, I must note that this suburban street scene is something the British do very well–there is not a jarring element in sight, from the wonderful crushed stone drive and masonry walls to the handsome houses. Well, maybe the broker’s sign and the waste bins, but even those manage to be a bit more subtle than what you typically see here stateside.

inetogether

If you haven’t visited inetogether you’re really missing out. Mark DeLong has one of the best restoration diaries I’ve read, and it’s fortunate for us it’s an E-Type he’s putting together–though I find all restoration diaries fascinating, whether they’re Jaguars or VWs or anything between. He’s now in year four of his restoration and is getting fairly close to finishing, if there is such a thing.

Mike Hawthorn, LeMans

If you’re a Jaguar fan, you’ve undoubtedly seen this, but it certainly can’t hurt to watch it again!

Note: If you can’t hear the sound, it’s a fairly common glitch that no one seems to have figured out. Click on the video to view it on YouTube’s own website, it will most likely work there.

Dueling Domains

Or why this blog is “only” displayed on the XKE site

Though XKdata and XKEdata are separate domain names and display different content, there is actually only one batch of code that controls both sites. Through some not-particularly-clever-but-still-pretty-cool behind the scenes juggling, I can determine what domain you came to, serve the appropriate content, present it in the correct design, etc. This also allows me to add other models of car in the future without too much trouble. This single code set also really helps when chasing bugs and adding new features. (more…)

New: Slide Display on Car Page

The slides which appear on a car’s page (if the car has any photos, of course) now have a couple of nifty features:

  • You can see ALL of a car’s photos at once, if you like. Look for the link that says “show all slides” and click it to reload the page.
  • Slides are now sorted within category by the date they were uploaded. This really helps add context to a car’s progress where a dedicated soul has been frequently updating the car’s entry.

To see both new features in action, check out Dave Kerr’s 1961 E-Type, #876160.
